Similarities

One that springs to mind immediately is the basic standing stance, where the emphasis is on grounding and really connecting with the floor/earth, while at the same time - in Chi Kung, - imagining the head being suspended from a golden thread, - and in Alexander Technique ‘directing’ the body to lengthen and widen away from the ground.
This thinking encourages grounding and centredness, growing and strength and also suppleness, while simply  standing just - like a tree.

Both practices presume integration of mind, body and spirit – and their influence over each other. For example F.M. Alexander talked about psycho-physical processes, - and “giving [mental] directions” for the body to respond to.  In Chi Kung we talk about intention, focussing and imagining in order to move the chi and effect changes in the body.
And so on.

A difference

While the Alexander Technique is applied to everyday situations and activities, Chi Kung offers a range of movements and non-movements, honing in specifically on the flow and increase of energy.
